Top Native American Performers coming to Ocmulgee Indian Celebration


Macon, GA September 5, 2003 - The Ocmulgee National Monument's 12th Annual Indian Celebration is poised to be the largest ever, with anticipated crowds of 20,000 for the weekend of September 20th and 21st, 2003. The annual event fills the air with traditional Native American arts, crafts, dancing, music, history, storytelling, food and much more. The event is 10 am - 6 pm, and tickets are $5 for ages 13 and over and free for ages 12 and under.

Included this year, is the much anticipated concert with two of the most well known and respected Native American performers, R. Carlos Nakai and Joanne Shenandoah. This year's concert is sponsored by Riverside Ford.

R. Carlos Nakai is the world's foremost performer of the Native American flute and in his hands it has the power to enrapture the listener like no other instrument. His music is authentically Native American yet original and personal, filled with the richness of his traditions. Of Navajo-Ute heritage and with an honorary doctorate by Northern Arizona University and the Arizona Board of Regents, Nakai is a diverse performer, touring throughout the world as a soloist with symphony orchestras and ethnic music ensembles. A prolific musician and composer, this GRAMMY nominee has produced 27 albums in his career and has sold over 3 million records.

A singer, songwriter, performer, composer, and GRAMMY nominee, Joanne Shenandoah has drawn upon her rich heritage in establishing a reputation as one of America's foremost Native recording artists. She is a Wolf Clan member of the Iroquois Confederacy - Oneida Nation. Presented with an honorary Doctorate of Music from Syracuse University, her original compositions, combined with a striking voice, enables her to embellish the ancient songs of the Iroquois using a blend of traditional and contemporary instrumentation. Billboard Magazine labeled this veteran Native American singer as the Enya of her culture. She has produced or contributed to over 21 albums.
