Cultural Awareness is Goal of Native American Gathering Planned for May 2004


?WILLIAMSPORT, PA July, 2004 - Eastern Delaware Nations and other Native American Communities in Pennsylvania are joining forces to present a Native American Gathering here next May. The Gathering will feature traditional drumming,traditional and contemporary music, storytelling, dancing, foods, art,clothing, crafts and demonstrations of various traditional skills.
    
Especially moving for many visitors will be an honor dance for all war and peacetime Veterans. Admission will be free for all ages to encourage
families to attend but donations will be accepted to help defray costs and support Eastern Delaware Nations Land Fund. An anti-drug message targeting children will be presented.
    
The Welcome Home Intertribal People's Gathering is planned for May 7 - 9 in one of the city's parks. An announcement will be made as to which
park as soon as the location is finalized. Visitors are cautioned to leave pets at home, as there will be no dogs allowed on the grounds.

Eastern Delaware Nations presents an annual Pow-wow at the Sullivan County Fair Grounds in Forksville on Father's Day weekend each June. In 1999 Eastern Delaware Nations, a 501c3 non-profit organization, purchased fifteen acres of ancestral land in Wyalusing, PA.

The organization recently received a $15,000 grant through the Endless Mountain Heritage Region to develop a long-range plan to prioritize
needs to maintain and preserve Delaware culture on this site. A Cutural Center, Museum and Council House are planned to interpret the traditions, culture and contributions of Native Americans to Pennyslvania's history, and provide visitors insight into today's Native American culture.
