California Native American Elders Tells Tales Around Campfire

Paiute elders Andy Allen and Ralph Burns share rich oral tradition of storytelling around the campfire 6:30 p.m. Aug. 16 at Marin Museum of the American Indian in Miwok Park, Novato, Ca.

This annual event, sponsored by the museum offers an evening of stories, memories, and glimpses into the Old Ways, as told by storytellers who bring with them the oral traditions of their ancestors.

These two skilled Native American storytellers are affiliated with the Walker River Paiute Reservation in Nevada. The tales they tell are entertaining and educational for audiences of all ages.

Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

The Marin Museum of the American Indian is the only museum in the San Francisco Bay Area devoted exclusively to Native American from all regions. It's goal is to promote an awareness and understanding of Native American history and culture, and offers a range of programs, including Camp Coyote for children, "Tales Around the Campfire", educational symposiums, and the current Kachina (Hopi Dolls) exhibit, as well as an ongoing display of rare indigenous toys, artifacts, and tools.

Cost for the event is a $5 donation for those 12 and older. A $5 donation is requested for a bowl of traditional homemade Buffalo stew, served in small bread bowls at 6 p.m.
